Another option to pay for parking coming to Seattle with new “text to pay” feature

Blog stats: 500 words | 3-minute read

We’re adding a new “text to pay” option for street parking to offer you more ways to quickly, conveniently, and securely pay for your spot. We’re starting in Pioneer Square to ensure the new system is working well. This service will expand to paid parking areas citywide by early 2027.

Read on to learn how it works or visit our website for more details.

A growing suite of options

  • This new option will add to Seattle’s existing payment methods: physical pay stations and by mobile app.
  • By offering text to pay, visitors and residents alike will have an option to pay for street parking without downloading an app.

Access to useful information

  • The text to pay user interface will make it easy to:
    • See current parking rates where you are
    • Find out how much time is available to purchase
  • After you send a text to 77447 (see more details below), you’ll receive a text response with a link to make payment (via your preferred mobile web browser), and receive a confirmation message when your payment is complete.
  • You’ll also receive text alerts before your time expires and have an option to extend it longer if you want (up to posted time limits), as well as download payment receipts.

Existing rates unaffected

  • The new text to pay service does not change existing hourly street parking rates in Seattle.
  • We update these rates several times a year based on real-world demand for parking. Rates vary based on time of day and location.

Keeping your data safe

  • Text to pay technology is used in other large cities across the country, including Los Angeles, San Jose, Atlanta, Portland, OR, and Columbus, OH.
  • It will operate under the same rules and regulations we use to manage paid parking in Seattle, while meeting the City of Seattle’s extensive data and privacy standards.
  • Please note that SDOT does not use QR codes for street parking payments. Be aware of potential scams using QR codes and do NOT try to pay for parking by scanning a QR code at a pay station in Seattle.

Below is an example sign showing how to pay by text by texting “PAY” to 77447 and entering the specific zone number where you parked.

A graphic showing a sign. It says "Text-to-Pay" and includes words and numbers, including Text: Pay, To: 77447, and Zone #: 86556. There is additional fine print and the City of Seattle logo, as well as a P parking symbol or icon.

What’s next

We’ll continue to monitor how people are using the text to pay feature as it’s rolled out and make adjustments as needed.

If you encounter any issues paying by text, you can continue to use physical pay stations (parking meters) or pay by mobile app instead.

We’d like to hear from you if you experience any challenges with the new text payment option. You can reach us at DOT_PayStations@seattle.gov.
