Seattle Fire Department accepting applications for entry-level firefighter/EMT positions

The Seattle Fire Department (SFD) is accepting applications for entry-level firefighter/EMT positions from Oct. 6 – Nov. 17, 2026. The department currently accepts applications for entry-level firefighter/EMT positions once per year.

The SFD is looking to recruit individuals who embody the department’s core values: integrity, teamwork, compassion, diversity and courage. Candidates also need to have physical strength, mechanical reasoning and mental perseverance. Seattle firefighter/EMTs are committed to serving others through providing emergency medical treatment and fire suppression.

The SFD offers many opportunities to serve the community. Employees begin your career with the department as a firefighter/EMT, and depending on their interest and skillsets, can explore additional pathways. The department has firefighter/paramedics, firefighter/dispatchers, fire investigators, fire prevention inspectors, rescue swimmers, wildland team members, specialty teams (Rescue 1, Hazardous Materials, Energy Response, Marine, Fireboat, Decon), members on FEMA’s Washington Task Force 1 Urban Search and Rescue, and more.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least 18 years old
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid driver’s license

  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification not required to apply, but is required for hire
