Work to improve safety on US 2 between Monroe and Gold Bar starts Oct. 5

MONROE – Work to improve safety along the US 2 corridor between Monroe and Gold Bar will begin Monday, Oct. 5.

Pedestrian and road safety improvements will be made at 11 locations along a 15-mile section of US 2. The work will stretch between Fryelands Boulevard in Monroe and First Street in Gold Bar. This project is scheduled to wrap up at the end of 2027.

Contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will begin by installing a temporary bypass lane. The lane will allow crews to build a roundabout at the intersection of US 2 and Old Owen Road in Sultan.

People traveling through this intersection should expect delays through Feb. 28, 2027, when roundabout construction is complete. During construction of the roundabout, traffic will use the bypass lane and a temporary traffic signal through the work site.

Other improvements will include upgrading pedestrian crossings, installing new signs and road markings, adding truck aprons and widening sidewalks. Travelers can expect single-lane and directional closures during the day and overnight while this work is underway. These improvements are expected to start in 2027. Dates will be announced once they are scheduled.

US 2 is one of only three year-round highways across Washington's Cascade Mountain range and plays a vital role in the state's transportation infrastructure.

Real-time traffic information is available on the WSDOT mobile app and the real-time travel map.
