Stage 2 burn ban: backyard firepit causes residential fire in South Park neighborhood

SEATTLE – On Aug. 23 at 9:24 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to a report of a shed fire in the 700 block of S Kenyon St. in Seattle’s South Park neighborhood. Engine 26 arrived at 9:27 a.m. and reported that the fire had spread from the shed to a fence and then to the covered deck of the residence. Members from Engine 26 upgraded the incident to a full response.

Firefighters got water on the fire but had trouble accessing portions of the covered deck due to extremely tight quarters. When more crews arrived, they were able to search the interior of the house and confirm the occupants had all made it out safely. The fire damaged the home’s siding, but firefighters were able to prevent it from spreading to the interior.

Firefighters extinguished the fire, and no injuries were reported. Seattle Fire requested Red Cross assistance for the homeowner.

Fire investigators ruled the fire as accidental, likely caused by a fire in a firepit in that spread to surrounding materials, including the shed and deck.

This fire serves as a reminder that the City of Seattle is under a Stage 2 burn ban. At this time, any outdoor fire – such as a backyard fire pit or campfire using chopped firewood or charcoal – is prohibited.
